The City of Albany will hold a citywide garage sale on Saturday, May 23, from 9am-3pm. It is an opportunity for the community to reduce, reuse, recycle and bargain hunt. Albany residents may be able to get free weatherization services as a new program funded by the federal stimulus money came into effect recently.

Youth soccer games could be seen on just about every open field in the region Saturday as the Alameda-Contra Costa Youth Soccer League launched its spring season. Albany had its own Chinese New Year parade and stage performance on Solano Avenue Saturday. Although it didn’t have splendid floats like the ones in San Francisco, local residents, including dozens of school children, put on a rich combination of Chinese arts and dances at the celebration. The gorgeous dragon that waved down Solano was hand-made by resident Zion Lee, out of recycled material.

The Albany Police Department is offering a free program for local teenagers to experience police life and to gain first-hand knowledge of the justice system.
The program, called Youth Academy, consists of several field trips to justice facilities as well as eight weekly meetings at the police department. A dozen Albany teenagers participated in the first session of the program and enjoyed it a lot. Hundreds of people gathered in Albany Sunday to remember Fred Oyle, a well-loved member of the community who passed away recently from a sudden heart attack.
50-year-old Oyle had lived on Key Route Boulevard with his family for more than a decade. He was a block captain, a popular house painter, and a devoted coach for the Albany Little League. Neighbors, friends and family members shared stories about Oyle’s cheerfulness and generosity at a packed hall at the Veteran’s Memorial Building. Read the rest of this entry »
The Albany YMCA will host a Math Festival Family Night to provide a fun way for children as well as adults to explore the wonderful world of mathematics. The event will be held at 921 Kains Avenue on Friday, February 6th, from 7:00 to 8:30 PM. It’s co-sponsored by the California Mathematics Council. All families in Albany are invited to attend. The City Council of Albany will host a seminar with small business owners to help them deal with the current economic recession. The free event will take place at the Albany Senior Center, Wednesday February 11th, 6 pm to 8 pm. It’s sponsored by the Solano Avenue Association and the Chamber of Commerce. A group of Albany dancers will perform a variety of ethnic dances to celebrate the Chinese New Year at the community center Monday, Jan. 26. Most of the performers are amateurs taking dance classes with Ah-lan Min, a former professional dancer in China. Below is a slideshow of photos taken during their rehearsal Sunday. The performance will start at 3:30 pm Monday at the hall of the Albany Community Center. Admission is free to all.

The Albany Unified School District will be holding a meeting to discuss and receive community input on the upcoming Albany High School Pool Construction Project. After serving the community for 58 years, the Albany Pool is closing its doors on December 21, Sunday to await demolition and future construction of a new pool facility.To commemorate the occasion, the AHS Swim Club and Swim Team are throwing a pool party. A reception to honor Charlie Blanchard, retiring President of the Board of Education, will be held at the Community Center, Tuesday 7:00-7:30 pm. Newly-elected member of the board Pat Low will also be welcomed at the event. The school board will review a budget report and interdistrict transfer policies at the meeting following the reception.

The City of Albany will hold a special meeting Monday, Dec. 8 to formally announce the results of the recent election. Farid Javandel, Robert Lieber and Peggy Thomsen will take oath of office to the City Council. Patricia Low and Ron Rosenbaum will take oath to serve on the Board of Education. A resolution will also be passed to honor Jewel Okawachi for her eight years of service on the Council and decades of service for the community. The Albany Arts Committee will sponsor an art show at the Community Center Saturday, Dec. 6th, 11am - 5 pm.
