Lottery will be drawn to assign Albany’s Community Garden Saturday
A lottery will be drawn at 12:00 pm., Saturday to assign a dozen plots of Ocean View Community Garden to members of the community. Lottery tickets will be distributed at 11:00 am at the garden (900 Buchanan Street, behind the Tennis Courts and Teen Center) . All Albany residents are invited to attend the event.
No early registration or application are needed. Contact Penelope Leach (510-559-7227, pleach@albanyca.org ) of Community Services Department if you have any questions.
Our family had a plot for years and it was fantastic. The community we met at the old community garden space was great! A lot of students at Cal who had plots were first generation or very recent immigrants and to see what they could do with a small amount of earth was incredible. [Note: the plots were maybe 4 times larger than the ones available by lottery now.]
From and education and play perspective, growing your own food can not be beat. I find this especially true for the older children who get to experience and comprehend the progression of food into garbage into soil into food. I can not describe how much fun it was to harvest our crops and to watch others harvest theirs. Not only do you get excellent food but our children learn that we really do have a connection to the earth. We reap what we sow.
We had to give up our plot when our friends who lived in the Village finished their education and moved. We would have loved to keep it. Now is our chance to share again!
Thanks for the nice message!
Thank you for your excellent service. Just wondering when your story/video on our lottery day will be posted. Perhaps you are waiting till after our first meeting next Saturday at garden at 10 am.
I was so pleased by the group of people who showed up for the lottery, lots of good energy and cooperative spirit, and kids yeah.
