Video: Homeless person plants trees at Albany Bulb
By Linda (Linjun) Fan
Michael Welch, a homeless person living at the Albany Bulb, joined a group of young people planting trees at the former landfill recently. They hauled compost, dug holes with shovels, and planted a dozen fruit trees at various spots of the Bulb. Welch planted a fig tree near his camp, which was the first tree he had ever planted in his life. Watch the video below for more of the story.
Dear Ms. Linjun Fan
I thank you for your continued contribution to Albany with your reporting. You are a treasure. Thanks for finding Michael.
Jim Kirkpatrick
Hi Jim,
Thanks a lot for you praise!
Linjun:
Do us a favor and tell Michael’s story. Why is he homeless? Does he have a job? Why not? Does he make use of the services that are available for homeless people? Does he know that his living on the bulb might intimidate other people who want to use that public space? What does he do with the garbage he generates? Ask him the hard questions.
Karin
Hi Karin,
Thanks for the message. I will find out more and write a longer story about him.
Best,
